Modu-Heroes | A Tale of Two Brothers

January 22, 2020

Wouldn’t it be cool to see Thor, the god of thunder himself, just casually walking down the street? Cool? Yes. Realistic? Maybe not. However, there are many examples of average people performing heroic acts. These are regular folks you may or may not know who see danger and take action without hesitation. They are ordinary people who display extraordinary feats of heroism and bravery in high-stress situations.

Modu-Loc is lucky enough to count some of those heroes as a part of our “Modu-Fam”. In fact, we are proud to be able to share several examples from across the organization, taking place in various parts of the country. With this “Modu-Heroes” series, we want to celebrate the Modu-Loc team members and real-life superheroes who have stepped up to help someone in distress.

We’re kicking off the series with a tale of two brothers who found themselves in not one, but two situations that required them to think quickly to save a life.

Cody Moffat, Shop Supervisor at the Toronto branch, was sitting in the break room before starting his day. Cody overheard his coworker Peter* coughing. The coughing sounded out of the ordinary, so Cody suspected something was not right. Peter insisted that he was okay, but Cody was troubled by a feeling that something was wrong. He asked Peter if he’d been experiencing any other symptoms aside from the coughing. Peter complained of chest pains, difficulty breathing, and trouble sleeping. Cody had just recently suffered from a lung collapse at that time, and was worried that Peter may be going through the same thing.

Although Peter was adamant that he was fine to get to work, Cody contended that the only place he was going was to the hospital. Cody took it upon himself to drive his colleague to the hospital. Later that day, Cody received a call from Peter. It turned out that Peter had been feeling this way because he had suffered a heart attack. Thankfully, he was going to be alright.

Without Cody noticing the signs of a medical crisis, and taking the appropriate action, there could have been far more serious consequences. Peter’s job consisted heavily of manual labour, which would have been extremely damaging to his condition if he were to try and work through. Worse, he may not have learned about his heart attack until there were even more dangerous and lasting implications.

This wasn’t Cody’s first time coming to the rescue. He and his brother Riley found themselves in a similar situation the previous year, this time on a major highway in the Greater Toronto Area…

It was a hot summer day, and traffic was moving slowly. Cody noticed a car that was veering off to the side. The driver didn’t appear to try and correct his course. Instead, he bumped into the guardrail, which Cody found odd. The brothers pulled up next to the vehicle and saw that the man behind the wheel appeared to be having a seizure. Cody pulled over and Riley jumped out to try and stop the other car, which was still in drive. Luckily, thanks to the hot weather, the man’s window was open enough so that Riley could reach his hand in and unlock the door. Riley put the vehicle in park and turned off the engine. The brothers then called 911 and waited with the man until emergency services arrived.

Without their brave acts, this man could have been seriously injured, and might have endangered other people on the highway since he had no control of the vehicle. Their quick thinking and their instinct to act responsibly and safely are what make them heroic. We are proud to have superheroes and all-around great people like Cody and Riley on our team.
